Please Be Careful!

The other day, another female runner was attacked at Laguna Hills, CA.  I say "another" because this is not the first the time something like this happened in that area.

I caught her being interviewed in the news and she said she was running at around 7:20pm when she was attacked by a man from behind and pushed to the bushes, away from the busy street.  There were a lot of cars but since it was dark no one even noticed this.  It a good thing she screamed, resisted and tried to make her way close to the street again.  At that point the attacker ran away.  She could have been raped!

She flagged down a car asking the driver to drive beside her as she head home.  No, she DID NOT get in the car coz she was too scared.  She just needed someone with her.  The driver of the car agreed, and followed her home until she was safe.

Ladies, please be careful out there, ok?  It's best not to run at night, if possible.  Maybe, not listening to music will also help so you are aware of your surroundings.

Just a friendly reminder.  Happy Weekend, everyone! =)

  1. That is SCARY. Oh man.

I always run with my cell phone on me, but I'm not sure that would help if I were attacked. Ug.

  2. so scary..I saw her on the news as well.
it is not just at night that it is dangerous for female runners...always best to run where there are cars passing by or houses. I used to take a path away from traffic and on January 1st I was all alone running on that path and I realized that this was a bad idea, someone could have been there waiting to attack the 1st runner and nobody would have seen a thing.

  3. Though you didn't say "guy" I'm assuming it was a guy and once again feel compelled to apologize on behalf of all the non-scumbag dudes out there.

I HATE it when ANYONE has to live in fear of attack like that. Also FYI for anyone in Orange County I've noticed a number of what seem to be informal groups of women getting together to run down at the HB pier at around 6 PM every night. I'm assume for safety, while it's still dark early.

  4. Thats a pretty scary story. I'm a bit with Patrick on this one, I feel the need to apologize.

But I get like this when my wife goes out for a coffee with a friend or hangs out a little later with her colleagues and I worry about her coming home alone or being assaulted.

  5. yes my wife and I saw this also.Of course i wasn't the end of the world for her but it does make you think. As for the girl, she was upset to say the least, but super brave.

  6. That is pretty awful. I feel comfortable running at night in my neighborhood, but anything could happen so i try to be aware, especially at night. Runners, especially women should carry pepper spray if the area is bad.

  9. Oh no! That's my worse fear during running. I never run in the dark (morning or night) and even when I run during the day, I always have my cell and pepper spray with me. Unfortuntely, you never know :(

  11. Hi Julie,
Wow! This is pretty scary and thank goodness it turned out okay for her. I live in such a nice suburb that the thought of an attack seems unreal.....the fact is that this type of attack can happen anywhere. Thanks for sharing!

I hope that you have a wonderful weekend Julie!

  12. I get so mad when I hear about things like this. You are right, people must be careful and not run alone at night and I always say, leave the music at home. Two years ago one of our top ultra runners was attacked and dragged into the bushes by her hair while running in a 100 mile race. Luckily she screamed and was rescued by a fellow runner and his crew. The main thing is to always be alert.
